All-Night Yahtzee was created in the Fall of 1998 by Brian Haverkate, a former Michigan State University student and MSU Accafellas alum who had transferred to FSU. He hoped to form a co-ed a cappella group similar to the incredible U of Michigan’s Amazin’ Blue, and began recruiting members from the Music School to join him. Thus, All-Night Yahtzee was born. The first concert was held in April of 1999 at Lindsay Recital Hall, marking the birth of a cappella music at Florida State.
The group has evolved over time, and over the past several years has risen through the ranks of collegiate a cappella to become one of the best collegiate groups in the world. As top competitors at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), Yahtzee has continued a tradition of excellence for FSU. For three consecutive years ANY held the title of #1 Collegiate A Cappella Group in the Southern United States, and had the privilege of representing the South at the ICCA finals in New York City. The group was awarded First Runner-Up at the 2008 Finals, making them the #2 collegiate a cappella group in the world!
Each year, All-Night Yahtzee hosts an average of three major performances at the university, including the annual “Random Acts of A Cappella” concert, for which a new philanthropy is chosen by current members each year. Every December, Yahtzee organizes workshops and tours high schools and middle schools all throughout central and south Florida. At each school, members of ANY teach the basics of a cappella, and work with students who are interested in creating their own a cappella group. At the end of the week, they put on a concert for all the involved schools, giving the students a chance to come up and sing with the group.
ANY also gives many performances for the community in and around Tallahassee, never forgetting that its biggest supporters are right here in the Capital City. Yahtzee has sung for the Bainbridge Arts Festival, ARTS Advocacy Day at the Capitol, the Florida Wine Festival, the Artist Series at Maclay School and dozens of other events; exposing new audiences to a cappella music is the group’s biggest priority. FSU student organizations frequently invite All-Night Yahtzee to entertain the crowds at on- and off-campus events, and the group has even had the honor of performing at Clock and Seal and PowWow in 2007 AND 2008.
